Uthaug

ForEsthetesandNatureLovers

T he fact that the village of Uthaug attracts artists is not surprising. This is one of the country's best-preserved fishing villages, and a stroll through Sjøgata offers picturesque fishing houses from the mid-1800s. However, Uthaug is not a mere museum; around 350 residents live and thrive here in everyday life and celebration.

Fighter Jets and Fish Factories

Uthaug is situated on the south side of Bjugnfjorden and north of the Ørland Main Air Station, a significant workplace. In fact, it’s the largest workplace in the region, where the Norwegian Air Force has gathered the nation’s combat aircraft power. Other industries in Uthaug include fish processing and concrete manufacturing.

Ancient Mounds and a Lighthouse

Uthaug has a rich history that dates far back in time. In the center of Uthaug was the former crofting place of Kirkebakke, which also houses the remains of a medieval church with a cemetery. Together with the former church and Nøkkelhaugen, a large Bronze Age burial mound, they bear witness to the fact that Uthaug was a central location in pre-Christian times and well into the Middle Ages.

Nøkkelhaugen is the largest of its kind in Trøndelag, which says a lot.

And there is more historical eye candy in Uthaug. The distinctive octagonal Kjeungskjær lighthouse just off the coast of Uthaug was established in 1880 and is certainly worth a visit.
