World-class Goatcheese
The fairytale village, tucked away deep within the Sognefjord, is surrounded by towering mountains. Additionally, it is situated right in the heart of UNESCO's World Heritage List, which speaks volumes about the nature here. It's no wonder if Disney's filmmakers have found inspiration here, to put it that way. However, Undredal is more than just wild nature and the picturesque collection of houses in the village.
Undredal has about 70 residents. And over 400 goats. And the goat cheese produced here is a delicacy of international caliber. Here, they have been making cheese in the traditional way for decades. The cheese has won numerous awards, and even magazines like Vogue have visited to taste-test it.
Both white cheese and brown cheese are made from the milk of the goats in Undredal.
Never heard of brown cheese? It's a Norwegian specialty found on breakfast tables and in lunch boxes across the country. Brown cheese is made from whey that has been cooked down, a byproduct of white cheese production.
Brown cheese isn't just served on slices of bread but also on crispbread, waffles, pancakes, or potato flatbread. It has a sweet taste due to caramelized lactose. A lot of people will call the tase caramel-like.
There are many types of Norwegian brown and white cheese, but the cheese from Undredal is truly exceptional.
