Home of the Sun (Sort of)

Located by the large freshwater lake named Storefjorden, Solheim comprises a handful of farms and a small number of houses. In other words, it’s pretty chill there. The birds are singing, and the occasional tractor is passing by. Neighbors pop by for a chat, and kids are playing at the playground. Solheim is a peaceful little pearl.

The name Sol-heim literally means «home of the sun». Relatively speaking – after all: this is Vestlandet. True, in the spring, summer and fall there often is sun from early morning to late evening. This is when the farmers harvest the grass in the hilly landscape. The sheep have taken their summer vacation, and are way up in the mountains, grassing and wandering where they want.

During the winter the sun is gone. But the cozy candles and crackling fireplaces are many. No doubt, the seasons are shifting and noticeable at Solheim.

Still, the village lies on the sunny side of the mountain, and you can easily grow veggies, berries and flowers here. If you’d rather pick blueberries, mulberries or chanterelle mushrooms, the forests and mountains around Solheim are generous in that department.

Hidden Gems of Storefjorden

The around 100 residents of Solheim know how to embrace the outdoors. Among the village’s hidden gems are the secluded beaches along Storefjorden, boasting fine-grained sand and crisp, cool water.

Fishing enthusiasts can borrow a boat and try their luck at catching trout. Adventurers can embark on a hike up to Blåfjellet («the blue mountain»), where they can explore natural caves known as the Church of Blåfjellet. En route, they will pass the Solheim summer mountain pasture, now utilized for recreational purposes by the villagers.

For those who enjoy deer hunting, she or he will find many fellow hunters at Solheim. Typically an activity for men, but not at Solheim. Several women join the annual deer hunt, so this is the place to be for hunters of either gender.

A five-minute drive from Solheim, you can rent canoes, buy an ice cream or dinner and check out the playground or volley ball court at Nesholmen leirstad. This location serves as a summer camp for kids and young people and is popular among locals.

Remote? Not Really

Sheep farmer and teacher Ola Solheim wouldn’t have it any other way.

«Although it’s pretty remote, it’s actually not that far to commute to the cities of Førde and Florø or to the town centre of Hyen. It takes me about 40 minutes to drive to my job in Førde, and I know a lot of people in bigger cities that spend more time than that getting to and from work – they have to walk to the bus or metro, wait, take the bus and walk more. We jump in the car and go. But of course, it is a big advantage to have a car – not too many buses pass by here,» he says with a smile.

«It’s a friendly community.»

Oh, and within less than a 90-minute drive you have access to no less than three airports from the village. Remote, but not – Solheim is a peaceful pearl, welcoming the right match.
