Sletta

Howdy,Cowboy!

A midst well-tended farms, where sheep graze in the summertime on a soft carpet of green, a picturesque scene unfolds. A gentle breeze causes the American flag to dance in the wind, amidst a backdrop of a few small houses – including a prison. Across the road there is a white church. Once these buildings were used by Norwegian-Americans in North Dakota and Minnesota. Welcome to Sletta.

Space Enough for Throwing that Lasso

The 50 kids at the local school are probably way better at lassoing and archering than their fellow pupils in other villages. After all, their neighbor is The Western Norway Emigration Centre. A lot of activies goes on at “the prairie village at Radøy”.

The Norwegian-American houses (the church, saloon, doctors’ office and prison) were erected by Norwegian-Americans in Minnesota and Dakota between 1860 and 1920. The builings were in use for many years, but in the end they stood empty. Finally, the village was dismantled and shipped across the world, finding its final destination at Sletta.

As for the people of Sletta, they enjoy a multitude of outdoor activities. There are many beautiful hiking trails and fjord activities. It’s for sure peaceful and spacious in Sletta. But bustling big city Bergen is within reach for those who need a change of scenery once in a while.

Where is Sletta?

Despite its seemingly remote location, Sletta is conveniently located within an hour’s drive from the city of Bergen. Situated on the island of Radøy, the village is home to approximately 400 residents. The landscape of Sletta differs from the rugged, mountainous terrain typically found along the west coast. Here, a fusion of fjord and prairie-like elements creates a nice ambiance. Farms dot the landscape, offering panoramic views of the fjord, while towering trees line the narrow road here and there.
