The Fishing Village

Skarsvåg (Skarfavahki in Northern Sami) is home to 60 residents and is located by Risfjorden on the northeast side of Magerøya Island in Nordkapp. Those who live here engage in fishing, art, cooking, and endure the sometimes harsh weather with a smile. The fishing village itself consists of a small cluster of houses, shops, and boats sheltered from the Arctic Ocean. Despite its size, the village boasts a restaurant serving fantastic seafood.

Above the restaurant stands the Christmas House, where they sell cozy Christmas decorations, products with local history, items made from driftwood and shells, and goods from other local craft producers. Here, the Christmas tree remains on display all year round. The festive spirit is only enhanced by the herds of reindeer that roam the area from time to time.

This is the land of reindeer, and there are plenty of beautiful hikes for two-legged visitors as well. A striking and historically significant hiking destination is Kirkeporten, a natural stone arch. This place was used as a pre-Christian Sami sacrificial site. From Kirkeporten, you have a view of the North Cape Cliff and the North Cape Horn. The location is a perfect subject for photographs, especially at night between mid-May and the end of July — at this time the midnight sun shines until around two o’clock at night.

The famous North Cape Plateau is just 14 kilometers from Skarsvåg. There’s much to explore in this northern, wild, and beautiful area!
