A Village Rich in History
Ose is located along the Otra River, where the waterway expands to form the freshwater lake Åraksfjorden. Historically, Ose was an important transportation center. From 1887, it served as the northern terminus for steamship traffic on the river, with the steamboats Bjoren and Dølen connecting the village to the wider region. Bjoren is still going strong, by the way.
In 1909, Ose Turistheim was built, making it the oldest tourist station in Setesdal still in operation today. This charming inn has retained its original character, offering six guest rooms, 14 beds, and hearty homemade traditional dishes that give visitors a taste of Setesdal.

Just across the road stands the historic Storstoga, a unique timber hall constructed from massive logs felled during the winter of 1655-56. Together, these buildings create a rare architectural and cultural environment that preserves the spirit of earlier times.
Festivals, Food, and Fun
Despite its small size, Ose is brimming with activity from time to time. The village is locally famous for hosting a variety of cultural events, such as concerts and the traditional Ose Food Market. Here, you can have a true feast, typically with dishes like komper (a type of potato dumplings), Setesdalssuppe (a local traditional, creamy soup), rjomegraut (sour cream porridge) and spekemat (a variety of dry-cured or smoked meats, such as cured ham, sausages, and other preserved meats, often served with flatbread and sour cream).

And let’s not forget the annual masquerade every January – a whole lot of fun and laughter!
These gatherings bring life and fun to the village, attracting crowds eager to experience live music, delicious local food, and the charm of the Setesdal culture.

Just south of Ose lies Reiårsfossen, a majestic waterfall plunging over 200 meters. This natural wonder comes with a local legend; it is said to be named after a local man, Reiår, who tragically lost his life attempting to ride across the falls to prove his love for a farmer’s daughter.
It didn’t end too well for Reiår. The rest of us prefer to simply take in the sight of beautiful Reiårsfossen.
