War Heroes and Partisans

Kiberg has a population of around 200 and is situated approximately 10 km southwest of the municipal center Vardø. The village has rich history, from the times of Pomor trade and World War II. During the war, a lot of young men from Kiberg travelled to the Soviet Union for guerrilla training and returned to Norway to become a part of the resistance movement in Norway.

Today, the little village is a great place for birdwatchers, as Kiberg also offers bird-watching facilities, where you can observe rare Arctic bird species in shelters at Østhavnen in Varanger. The wind and weather shelters are placed along the Kiberg beach, so that you can get close to rare birds – and other birds.

In short, there is much nature waiting to be explored in and around Kiberg. The wild landscape stretches out with bird cliffs, fishing spots, and rugged rocks.

You can also encounter rivers full of jumping fish and leaping salmon, snow-covered plateaus, exotic king crabs, and of course a whole lot of spirited birds. This is a place for being outdoors, and perhaps enjoy deep-sea fishing, check out the whale and king crab safaris, among other Arctic activities. And the reindeers – oh, the reindeers!

Being a fishing village, it’s kind of obvious what most people work with. But there also local providers offering accommodation, food and activites for tourists and visitors.
