The development project “Åkle” is manifested in the grayed mass timber and comprises dozens of apartments and commercial buildings like a grocery store and a café. The residences are connected to an underground parking facility, a rarity so far from the city.

The municipality’s rich heritage and identity have merged with the ambition of environmentally friendly placemaking.

However, Birketveit is more than just the Åkle project. The village boasts its own sports hall and a beautiful white church a bit further away. Several houses dot the hillsides, offering views of a lake surrounded by lush forest.

Unique Rocky Outcrop

“Ivelandsveggen” is a sculpted rocky outcrop at the entrance to Birketveit. At first glance, it might resemble a giant modern painting. But it’s stone and nature’s own masterpiece. The exposed layers — gabbro, amphibolite and pegmatite veins some 1,200 million years old — form a geological cross-section illustrating the most characteristic rock types in Iveland and how they appear.

Iveland municipality has a rich mining history, with hundreds of old pegmatite mines scattered across the landscape and more than a hundred different minerals recorded in the area. Geology and minerals have become an integral part of the culture. To commemorate this, a portion of the mountainside was cut to reveal the rock’s structure. The pattern exposed has gained worldwide recognition among geologists. Numerous geologists and students have used this exposure to study the area’s geology. The nearby Fennefoss Geomuseum, founded in 1975, houses over 1,500 mineral specimens from the region and tells the story of Iveland’s deep connection to the bedrock beneath it.
