Bekkarfjord

TheCoolestMilkintheWorld

B ekkarfjord is a tiny beauty, far up north. The village is the home of the world’s northernmost dairy farm, the county’s largest hen farm and of course — fishing is big. Great local food produced under the magical northern lights. Not bad for a place with 16 inhabitants!

«Almost everyone that comes to visit Bekkarfjord, express the more or less the same thing. They feel like they’ve stumbled upon an oasis,» Lise Kaldahl Skreddernes says with a smile. She is the owner of the dairy farm.

The road to Bekkarfjord is called “the Panorama road” by the locals. The view is breathtaking, down towards the fjord and the stoic mountains. As you drive down to the village, you’ll pass forested slopes, bare mountain plateaus, and fishing lakes. In short — kind of great for those who enjoy outdoor activities.

Life in Nature

«What I cherish most about living here is our close and harmonious connection with nature. Our days are intertwined with the elements, whether they bring us good or challenging days. It instills in us a sense of independence, I suppose. That, to me, is the true beauty of living here.»

«This is certainly not the place to live if your main interests are things like shopping or theatre,» Lise chuckles.

«That being said, it’s a great place if you are an outdoor enthusiast. For me, it’s fantastic to hike and enjoy the nature here — every season has its charm. We pick blueberries, many like to hunt and fish. The distance between the shore and the mountain is short, and there is always new things to explore,» she says.

A Nation of Milk

Norway’s relationship with milk runs deep. For over a thousand years, dairy farming shaped life across the country — from the seter mountain pastures of the Iron Age to the cooperative dairies that emerged in the 1800s. At its peak, some 50,000 summer farms dotted the Norwegian highlands, and the tradition was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2024.

Today, TINE — the farmer-owned cooperative founded over 160 years ago — collects milk from around 15,000 producers across the country. Norwegian milk meets some of the world’s strictest quality standards: every cow has carried its own health card since 1975, and by law cattle must graze outdoors at least eight weeks a year.

Yet the number of dairy farms keeps falling. In Northern Norway alone, one-third of all dairy cows have disappeared over the past two decades. In many villages, only one or two active farms remain. Bekkarfjord’s Kraabøl farm — where 16 cows produce 130,000 litres a year at 70° north — is not just a curiosity. It is a living link in a chain that stretches back centuries.
